Browns’ Josh Gordon scores 1st TD in 1,456 days

He caught four passes for 85 yards in Los Angeles.

Gordon’s touchdown reception was just the third by a Browns receiver this season, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Kizer was 1-for-10 with two interceptions throwing to wide receivers in the end zone before his touchdown pass to Gordon.

After a summer of Deflategate coverage, it may not surprise you that misery sometimes surrounds the Patriots. That rings true for the Raiders, who still rue the once anonymous, now infamous and discarded ‘Tuck Rule.’

Before Tom Brady and the Patriots ever won a Super Bowl, they first won a highly controversial 2001 AFC divisional round game against the Raiders. With his team leading 13-10, the Raiders’ Charles Woodson appeared to strip Brady behind the line, forcing a late fourth-quarter fumble and seemingly securing the game. But upon further review, referee Walt Coleman reversed the call, citing ‘The Tuck Rule.’

Larry Fitzgerald’s climb up the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list continued Sunday. The Arizona Cardinals wide receiver passed longtime mentor and friend Randy Moss for third place on the list in a 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Fitzgerald entered the game needing 25 yards to match Moss’ 15,292 career yards. He passed Moss in the third quarter on a 23-yard pass from quarterback Blaine Gabbert. Fitzgerald finished the day with 44 yards on five receptions.

Fitzgerald was a ball boy for the Vikings and used to wash Moss’ cars for cash, and even borrowed his BMW to go to the high school prom.

The next target for Fitzgerald will be Terrell Owens, who is second on the all-time list with 15,934 career receiving yards.

Coach Sean McDermott stood his ground in the days following the Nathan Peterman debacle.

To the NFL’s credit, last year’s game in Mexico City turned out to be a great event, with an entertaining game between the Raiders and Texans to boot. This could duplicate or surpass it if both fan bases show up and show out.

The odds were strong that Peterman would be rewarded for his five-interception half with another start. Even though the Chiefs gave up just one touchdown to the Giants in last week’s loss, the defense has not gotten enough blame for the Kansas City’s recent fade (bottom 10 in yards, yards per play and sacks, middle of the pack in takeaways and points). It won’t matter, though. Peterman does not make the Bills better.

Oakland can still give New England trouble with Carr and Marshawn Lynch, but the Raiders are too beat up defensively to slow down Tom Brady. Oakland brings a lot of attitude in the altitude, along with a lot of points, but the Patriots will score more.

No, Bum Phillips and Chuck Noll ain’t walking through that door, but there’s plenty at stake, albeit on a short week. The Steelers are blowing hot-and-cold again, sweating out the Colts more than they reasonably should have. The Titans have quietly won four in a row, all since getting Marcus Mariota back from a hamstring injury. They also have the AFC South tiebreaker over Jacksonville. Theysmell the playoffs. They should not be taken lightly.

The Eagles again fail to take advantage of a Cowboys turnover. They go three-and-out and are forced to punt.

Turnover, Cowboys. Prescott throws his second interception of the game. This time, he underthrows a deep ball to Dez Bryant on a third-and-17 play and Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby comes down with it. Philadelphia takes over near midfield.patriots_011-180x180

Josh Paul is Angels’ new bench coach, replacing Dino Ebel

Josh Paul has been named the Los Angeles Angels’ bench coach.

Alex Smith was fantasy’s top-scoring quarterback during the Chiefs’ demolition of the league during Weeks 1-5. Since that point, however, he sits 13th. Smith totaled 12 touchdowns and no turnovers during the five-game winning streak to begin the year but has seven scores and four turnovers during the recent 1-4 slump. Smith’s hot start got our attention, but a breakout in his 13th NFL season was always unlikely. Smith has never finished a season better than 13th at the position in fantasy points and has reverted to fringe QB1 territory in recent weeks. Despite his recent struggles, Smith has a very appealing upcoming schedule and should be in lineups against Buffalo’s floundering defense this week.

Having reached the quarter mark of the 2017-18 season, it’s time to review the summer’s most notable free-agent signings for early indications of success.

Studying all the significant free-agent contracts signed since July 1, some have already paid dividends, while others are yet to work out. And, some of them are projected to achieve good value over the long term, while others are not.

Ben Roethlisberger exploded for 299 yards and four touchdowns against the Titans in Week 11. It was the first game this season in which Roethlisberger scored more than twice in a game and marked his third-highest passing-yardage total.

To some vacant lot to be named later in Queens?

Understand this: Tavares wants to be an Islander. He loves being an Islander. He’s made it known, throughout his career, that returning this franchise to championship glory is important to him.

But at this point, it has to be weighing on Tavares to constantly worry about the direction of the New York Islanders: Not just on the ice, where he’s been to the playoffs three times and out of the first round once in nine seasons; but also literally in what direction the franchise will be moving next. To a new arena at Belmont Park, after the Brooklyn debacle ends?

“We thought about it for about 10 minutes and said this is too good of an opportunity to not take advantage of, and so we jumped at it,” Lynch said.

“Big-time player, great performer. He stepped up big. Huge play. Biggest play in history,” Antonio Brown said afterwards. However, guard David DeCastro had the most fitting description of the play.”He was moving like he was riding his bike,” said DeCastro.

Before throwing in the towel on Ajayi, let’s take a look at the metrics to see if trying too hard seems to be the cause of his subpar production.

Briean Boddy-Calhoun, CB, Cleveland Browns: Boddy-Calhoun exited the game during the second half of Sunday’s game and was declared out because of a hamstring injury.

Duke Johnson Jr., RB, Cleveland Browns: The Browns announced during the fourth quarter that Johnson was being evaluated for a concussion. The club updated the situation after the game had concluded, indicating that Johnson had cleared the concussion protocol.nike-womennfl-saints-158

It was the 11th assist for Gaudreau, who leads the team with 14 points.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are now the only team Westbrook hasn’t recorded a triple-double against, after he notched his third of the season and 82nd of his career in a 101-69 win over the Bulls.

Benjamin never turned into the next Megatron, for sure, and losing a year to an ACL tear didn’t help. But having him looks, on the surface, better than not having him. Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane, who were on site in Carolina when Benjamin was drafted, seemed to think the Bills were better off with Benjamin than without. They’re 5-2 with their sights set on more.

The Panthers are 5-3. Their sights are set on … what, exactly? The negative is pretty obvious, to borrow Cam’s phrase. The optimism, not so much.

Monahan converted Gaudreau’s pass for the go-ahead goal 9:09 into the third period Sunday night and the Calgary Flames broke a four-game home losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals.

After not finding anyone open as he carried the puck toward the net, Gaudreau curled back at the faceoff dot and tried again, this time spotting Monahan alone at the far post. All the Flames’ leading goal scorer had to do was slide in his sixth of the season.

“That’s Johnny. We see it day-in, day-out. He’s got great hands and he’s got quick feet. He reads the game better than anyone I know,” Monahan said. “If you get open in a quiet area you’re usually going to find the puck.”

Micheal Ferland, the third member of Calgary’s top line, scored the other goal for the Flames.heat_053

Top streaming options for fantasy football Week 8

Each week of the NFL campaign we will sift through the deeper options at each position with an eye on identifying streaming fantasy commodities with valuable matchups to consider.

The Broncos also have learned just how valuable wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders is to their offense. He was Siemian’s go-to guy for field stretching and dirty work in the slot. Sanders going down with an ankle injury last week led to a big absence against the Chargers, who were able to give top cornerback Casey Hayward coverage support on No. 1 wideout Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas has had trouble breaking free over the past two seasons when double-teamed. His one breakout catch against the Chargers was called back with a penalty after he resorted to pushing off on Hayward.

Players must have at least a 20 percent start percentage (“Start%”) in either standard PPR or non-PPR scoring, or must rank among the top 20 quarterbacks, tight ends or kickers, top 50 running backs or wide receivers, or top 40 defensive linemen, linebackers or defensive backs, in terms of total fantasy points at their position from 2015-17, for inclusion in the chart. All defense/special teams are included, regardless of whether they met those minimums.

Jack Doyle, TE, Indianapolis Colts (35.1 percent): As we mentioned with Kroft, it’s hard to find a trustable tight end week to week. Doyle’s volume the past two games has been terrific, as he has posted 18 total targets and 11 catches, including a score. Although Doyle has just one catch of more than 20 yards this season, he has consistently been involved as part of an Indy offense that has found itself playing from behind frequently. He’s a usable tight end, be it to replace a struggling starter or to fill in for a player who is injured or on a bye.chargers_011

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie reinstated by Giants after 1-game suspension

Giants head coach Ben McAdoo reinstated cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Tuesday, after suspending him for leaving the team, the team announced on Tuesday.

Despite all of the reported issues, Landon Collins was supportive of DRC after the game against the Broncos, and said via NJ.com, “My man is coming back Monday.”

“His mindset is he just wants to be out here,” Collins added. “We always have our chant, ‘See ball, get ball.’ He sent us a group message, ‘See ball, go get ball.’ And we all replied back, ‘See ball, get ball.’”

The Giants are coming off a Sunday Night Football win against the Broncos that nobody expected them to win. The Giants went into the game depleted offensively with injuries, missing both Brandon Marshall and Odell Beckham Jr. Yet they were able to come away with an impressive road victory, 20-10.

The Giants will hope to carry the momentum and welcome back Rodgers-Cromartie into Sunday as they welcome Seattle to MetLife Stadium.

Poor air quality has caused high school and youth teams to forgo outdoor activities altogether to protect players from smoke inhalation. Many high school games have already been canceled for this week.

Oakland shortened its practice on Thursday, also, as the EPA has deemed the region’s air quality “unhealthy.” While players are on the field, some are taking extra measures to avoid smoke inhalation.

“We’re seeing the worst air quality ever recorded in many parts of the Bay Area,” Tom Flannigan from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District told the Chronicle. “The entire Bay Area population is likely being affected by the smoke.”

The wildfires have claimed the lives of at least 23 people, while hundreds remain missing. It may disrupt the Raiders’ game preparation routine, but that’s a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme.

The absence of fanfare is just fine with both Rose and Wade.

“Most guys in my position don’t get drafted to such a high-caliber team like the Celtics, so it makes me work harder because I have to compete and earn everything,” he said.

As he talks, Tatum’s eyes are glued to Brown, who has returned to the floor for some shots following their one-on-one battles. The two were fast friends this summer, especially having already crossed paths during their high school days. Brown knows all about what Tatum is about to experience and is eager to help him along the way.

Brown, after riding the rookie roller coaster a year ago, is competing for a starting job this season. He speaks with a wisdom well beyond his mere 20 years, and that’s reflected when he calls Tatum “Kid” while praising the way Tatum approaches the game.

Dorsey was part of the package sent by San Francisco to Cleveland for quarterback Trent Dilfer in the 2006 offseason.

“[Rose] came in with no ego at all, just saying, ‘Coach, whatever you need me to do, and if you yell at me, cuss at me,'” Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. “I said, ‘I don’t do all that.’ But he said, ‘Whatever it is I can take it. Whatever you need me to do, I’m willing to do.’ And D-Wade has been pretty much the same. Coming in and knowing it’s about sacrifice. If you want to win a championship and have a chance to win a championship, you have to sacrifice. They understand that.”

Dwyane Wade secures Cleveland’s final starting roster spot, reuniting him with LeBron James in the starting lineup. The last time they linked up in that fashion, the pair, playing for Miami, made it to four straight Finals.

Derrick Rose admits that his mental approach in the past — not just his physical ailments — started to lead his career astray and says he is determined to get back on track with the Cleveland Cavaliers.ravens_008

Cam Newton has hilarious goof on ‘The $100,000 Pyramid’

Cam Newton had a funny moment during his appearance on ABC’s “The $100,000 Pyramid” on Sunday.

The Panthers quarterback confused the words “crouch” and “crotch,” as he squared off against Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

The key for Teague is that he gives the Timberwolves a point guard who can not only run offense by himself, but he can also play off the ball next to Butler. In the past two years, Teague has sneakily become a terrific shooter. He’s hit 38 percent of his 527 3-point attempts. Last year, Teague finished in the 83rd percentile of all players in jump shooting off the catch. In 2015-16, Teague was the best off-the-catch shooter in the NBA according to Synergy, hitting his 101 attempts at a 75.2 effective field goal percentage.

Sure, Teague does not necessarily bring the defense that Rubio does. But his offensive profile is stronger, his fit on the team is better and the Timberwolves get a first-round pick for their troubles. I’m a fan of this move, overall.

Coaches are fine. They don’t add much to the lottery in terms of entertainment value, but fine. It would have been nice to see DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis being forced to share a chair. The real question here: will we see evil goatee Joerger or regular Joerger?

Roethlisberger has been with the Steelers, who took him with the 11th pick in the 2004 draft

“It doesn’t change our planning,” Colbert continued. “When we scout in the fall, we scout every position. Even when Ben was a young player, we still evaluated the quarterback class, because how the quarterbacks stack up (in the draft) is going to affect how the tackles stack up and how the receivers stack up. We always evaluate every position, and if Ben would decide to retire we would be prepared then to move accordingly. I hope we don’t get to that situation for a few more years.

“I’m working under the assumption that until he says he’s retired officially, then he’s not. If he decides to (retire), then we’ll act accordingly, but in the meantime we’re not going to get out of sorts with potential retirements… I’m hopeful and confident Ben will be back.”

Ben Roethlisberger has been with the Steelers, who took him with the 11th pick in the 2004 draft, his entire 13-year career. He figures to retire as a member of the Steelers, which is also how Colbert wants Bell to end his career.

The two sides have to work out a long-term deal and the Steelers could place the franchise tag on Bell by March 1 to prevent him from becoming a free agent on March 9. Bell was a second-round pick of the Steelers in 2013 and has rushed for 4,045 yards and 26 touchdowns despite missing 14 games because of injuries and suspensions.

Things went poorly with that, to put it mildly. Hey, if they hadn’t, the Chiefs would be dealing with someone else’s long-term negotiations, instead of with their single best defensive player and, if not the very best in the league at his position, one of the top three.

By rule, a player can be tagged three straight times. No team has been crazy enough to try it. There’s no reason to think it will happen with Berry. But that’s always hanging out there, right over the head of a key player in the middle of his prime reaching a career crossroads. texans_025
