Jets sign third-rounder Nathan Shepherd

The Jets continued whittling down their number of unsigned draft picks on Friday.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Jets have signed third-round choice Nathan Shepherd to a four-year deal. Shepherd is the fourth of six 2018 picks to agree to a deal, leaving first-round quarterback Sam Darnold and fourth-round tight end Chris Herndon as the unsigned members of the group.

That’s accurate. But James had just played a game that would’ve been the greatest career performance for about 99 percent of the NBA, and Thompson moved through remarking on it like he would any other routine task. He was hardly alone.

Korver held court for 15 minutes after the game. He talked about being compared to Dikembe Mutombo, golf, how his dive on the floor for a loose ball reminded people of Pete Rose and how he liked being 36 years old way more than he likes being 37 — “I wish I was 36; I loved being 36” — and only mentioned James’ incredible game in passing.

May is a time for NFL teams and fans to entertain all possibilities for the upcoming season. Even the league’s most downtrodden franchises can envision a swift rise, especially given the examples set by others last year. The Philadelphia Eagles became the first team since the 2009 New Orleans Saints to win the Super Bowl after finishing in last place in their division the previous season. The Jacksonville Jaguars captured the AFC South crown for the first time in franchise history after finishing in the cellar in 2016.

Randy Gregory will apply for NFL reinstatement on Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Gregory received a one-year suspension in January 2017, after his third failed violation of the league’s drug-testing policy. Rapoport tweeted that Gregory recently spent more than six weeks in intensive drug and alcohol rehab in addition to counseling. Randy Gregory will reportedly apply for NFL reinstatement on Thursday; he received a one-year suspension after multiple failed drug tests.ravens_100

Green Bay traded down and ended up with Louisville’s Jaire Alexander, while Minnesota stayed put and got UCF’s Mike Hughes at No. 30.

Would it finally break in the Capitals’ favor? Of course not. Bonino scored the series winner 6:32 into overtime to send Pittsburgh to the Eastern Conference Final. At least it helped give us the origins of the “Bonino, Bonino, Boninooooo!” call from Hockey Night Punjabi.

Howie Kendrick (R), 14.5 percent, Washington Nationals at New York Mets (LHP Steven Matz): With Daniel Murphy (knee) expected to remain sidelined until next week, the vet has some short-term utility as a fill-in at either second base or left field. Kendrick enjoyed a .385 wOBA against southpaws in 2017 and has gone 3-for-10 against them to start 2018.

Neither corner should have gone ahead of Jackson, the Iowa prospect who wasn’t taken in Round 1. Alexander has more flair, but Jackson is more well-rounded. Hughes might be limited to slot duty, while Jackson has more immediate starting ability outside. Jackson would fit the Colts early in Round 2.

Rozier: “You have to fight, and that’s what we did. We had each other’s back, and we never stopped believing that we were going to win, and we did what we have to do in overtime.”

Stevens: “Sometimes I think they’re at their best when those things happen, you know? I think it’s just a resilient group of kids. Not kids, men.”

There are multiple ways Carolina could go with pick No. 24 given the number of needs they have, particularly for an impact starter. If they aren’t quite sold on Reid, Moore or others available at those positions, then they should have a few other options from which to choose.

“Obviously we would love to keep adding parts to the secondary,” said Hurney. “I do think if we can help the secondary, if we can help the pass rush, if we can add skills players on the offensive side of the ball, that’s something we’d love to do while still keeping our offensive line and defensive line strong because really that’s the key. You’ve got to protect the passer and you’ve got to rush the passer.”

NFL Draft 2018: Could the Browns actually select a QB at No. 1 and 4?

The Browns have made some interesting quarterback decisions over the last few years, and their position in the 2018 NFL Draft sets them up for a chance at redemption or a way to continue the trend of disappointment.

That means two top-4 picks in this year’s draft would sit the bench the entire season, neither guaranteed a starting job in Year 2, either. Supposing one of them were to win the starting job in 2019, the other would be left to rot as a backup or be traded. Either way, the Browns waste a top-4 pick.

The Browns own five picks in the top 64 picks. They don’t even need to take one quarterback with their top-two picks. Penn State running back Saquon Barkley is largely considered the best player in the draft and would immediately upgrade the Browns’ roster. Cleveland could then take N.C. State defensive end Bradley Chubb at No. 4 to bolster their pass rush. That way it gets two immediate starters that could be perennial Pro Bowlers.

With so many picks in the second round, Cleveland could then trade back up into the first round to get either Mason Rudolph or Lamar Jackson, who could become the best two quarterbacks in this draft.

The allure of taking a quarterback early has bitten the Browns time and time again. It’s time to change their ways by waiting on a quarterback and taking players actually capable of helping them win games.

Pina, who spent his first two big league seasons with the Royals, was hitting .219 with a homer and three RBIs when he went on the DL retroactive to April 13 with a strained left calf.

In other news, shortstop Orlando Arcia got the day off because of stomach pain, though his ailing ankle was fine. Left-hander Boone Logan also threw a simulated game without any trouble from his left triceps strain, and is expected to join Double-A Biloxi on a rehab assignment.

Spoelstra said Friday he wasn’t “making any excuse” for Whiteside, but that injuries were simply part of the reality of playing in the NBA.

“Players have to go through that from time to time,” Spoelstra said. “But he played six weeks with that not at a level that he wanted to. Then we had to sit him out for six weeks, and from there it just became uneven.”

Spoelstra said several times during the Heat’s first-round series that it was his responsibility to get more from Whiteside, whose diminished minutes in the first two games of the series were in part due to the Sixers playing smaller lineups with Joel Embiid (orbital fracture) sidelined.

Embiid returned for Game 3, but that didn’t lead to more playing time for Whiteside. The Heat center picked up two fouls in the opening six minutes of the first quarter and was limited by foul trouble for much of the game.steelers_122

Even the competition is in Colin Kaepernick’s corner now.

Two days after working out in front of NFL scouts, including representatives from the Jets and Giants, former pro quarterback Johnny Manziel came to his beleaguered fellow passer’s defense on Twitter.

“This will probably cause an uproar, but I’m tired of the @Kaepernick7 vs myself comparisons and anger,” Manziel wrote on the social media site Saturday afternoon. “Kap is doing amazing things right now changing lives and donating millions of dollars. His impact off the field from a societal standpoint is legendary and straight admirable.”

Manziel’s tweet storm ended with a direct address to Kaepernick, wishing him luck in the future.

“I rock with you @Kaepernick7,” he wrote. “You’ve always been good to me and I appreciate that. All the best in your journey my friend wherever that takes you.”

Rosen added he had worked out privately for the Giants, Jets, Browns and Bills.

After saying he learned through Instagram that the Jets had traded up to No. 3, he demurred when asked if he believed it was because he had worked out for the team a day earlier.

Mitchell’s timetable accelerated because of his aptitude. He showed the ability to develop new skills — such as finishing off one foot in traffic, a focus in his offseason workouts with Bryant — and instantly incorporate them into his game, grasping through film study the appropriate times to use his new tools.

“These guys dig in,” Snyder says of Mitchell and Bryant. “It’s that kind of cycle of ‘practice it, recognize it, use it.’ That whole process is what makes these guys good together.”

Bergeron ranked fifth in faceoff percentage (57.3) and first in short-handed faceoff percentage (59.3) and finished at plus-21 in 64 games played.

Kopitar, who won the award in 2016, led all NHL forwards in average time on ice at 22:05 per game. Kopitar often saw duty on the Kings’ penalty-kill unit, which finished tops in the league in penalty killing percentage (85.0).jets_105

NFL nixes need for extra-point attempt after game-winning TD

The NFL passed another rule change that came in under the radar Tuesday. The league will no longer require a team to line up for an extra point or two-point attempt after scoring a game-winning touchdown, according to Jeremy Bergman of The rule was approved by the NFL’s competition committee. The impetus for such a rule change came after the Minnesota Vikings scored a last-gasp victory over the New Orleans Saints as the clock ticked down in their 2017 divisional playoff game.

Smoak connected against reliever Tommy Kahnle in the seventh, then brought the crowd of 29,091 to its feet with his second career slam, a drive off Robertson (0-1).

He’s one of the best in the game so you know it’s going to be a tough at-bat, Smoak said of his nine-pitch encounter with Robertson. I just tried to battle and battle and battle.

Smoak went 3 for 4 with a walk and six RBI in his seventh career multihomer game as Toronto gained a series split, winning the final two games.

The 37-year-old-model-turned-author told the Wall Street Journal that it’s not her decision to make when it comes to the New England Patriots quarterback calling it a career.

It’s his decision and he knows it, Bundchen said in the interview. It wouldn’t be fair any other way.

Brady, who will be 41 in August, won the NFL MVP award at age 40, but the Patriots suffered a disappointing 41-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII, keeping Brady from his sixth title. Bundchen noted that Brady is so focused right now and that she can see just how passionate he remains about football.

I’m glad I was thinking the way I was thinking, Smoak said of his decision to look for the fastball.

Smoak’s other slam also came against the Yankees. In 2015, he went deep off Ivan Nova to become the first Blue Jays player to hit a grand slam in the Bronx — Toronto joined the majors in 1977.

Tyler Clippard (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning and Seung Hwan Oh finished for his first save.patriots_097

Texans re-sign Johnathan Joseph

The Texans added a piece to their secondary on Wednesday when they signed Aaron Colvin and he’ll share the secondary with a longtime member of the team.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team has re-signed Johnathan Joseph. It’s a two-year deal for the 2006 first-round pick.

That’s it. And it’s a significant deal. Given that so much of the 2019 salary is guaranteed, all of the 2019 salary is essentially guaranteed. That’s $34 million over two years. The non-guaranteed year has a value of $14 million — a bargain in light of the $17 million per year paid over the first two.

Drafted by the Bills in 2014, Watkins was traded to the Rams during 2018 training camp. He’ll sign with the Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent.

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett was i49ers_156ndicted Friday by a Texas grand jury on a felony abuse charge for allegedly injuring an elderly NRG Stadium worker following Super Bowl LI last year.

Colquitt punted 65 times last season and posted a net average of 41.1 yards per kick. That’s a career best for Colquitt, who has a net average of 39.8 yards for his career.

The Chiefs have long snapper James Winchester and kicker Harrison Butker under contract, so Colquitt’s returns keeps their kicking game intact for 2018.

Teddy Bridgewater is getting a fresh start in a new place that suddenly has a crowded quarterbacks room — and could be adding another signal caller soon.

Firing people, not to mention one of the most important people in the free world, on social media. Then the president fired the former deputy director of the FBI, career law-enforcement officer Andrew McCabe, days before he’d have qualified for his pension, apparently because the president felt McCabe was too close and too sympathetic to former FBI director James Comey.

(Also: NBC reported in January that Trump, in a conversation with McCabe, called McCabe’s wife “a loser” when she lost an election for a Virginia state senate seat.) All week, news of the legal fight between porn star Stormy Daniels and Trump over their alleged 2006 affair filled TV shows and the internet and front pages nationwide. s. Just another week in the life of our country, 2018. Are we planning to wake up anytime soon

Former CIA director John Brennan spoke for all people on the right side of history Saturday, using the president’s favorite medium, Twitter, thusly as he addressed the president: “When the full extent of your venality, moral turpitude, and political corruption becomes known, you will take your rightful place as a disgraced demagogue in the dustbin of history. You may scapegoat Andy McCabe, but you will not destroy America…

The New York Jets signed the former Minnesota Vikings star to a one-year contract, making the deal official Sunday. Bridgewater’s signing comes a day after the Jets traded up to acquire the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft from the Colts — likely with the intention of assuring themselves of getting one of the top available quarterbacks.

GM Chris Ballard said as much to his team’s website Saturday, and I can add a confirmation to that. Ballard’s going to try. This deal: Indianapolis traded the third overall pick to the Jets for a first-rounder this year (sixth overall), two second-rounders this year (37th and 49th overall) and a second-round pick next year. It’s pretty easy to say the Colts routed the Jets, getting three second-round picks to move three measly spots. But they’re three giant spots if you want to be assured of getting one of the top quarterbacks in this draft.

In potential Kemba Walker trade, Hornets risk losing more than just franchise star

Kemba Walker took shot after shot Friday on a side hoop at the Spectrum Center practice court. Floater in the paint, layup on the right block with the inside hand, layup on the left block off the wrong foot, corner 3-pointer. He’s a professional basketball player, pure and simple, and this was just another day to work on his craft.

Attaching Walker’s bargain contract — he makes $12 million this season and next season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2019 — to an expensive piece like Nic Batum, Dwight Howard, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist or Marvin Williams would allow the Hornets to clear space while, ideally, netting a young prospect or first-round draft pick.

Kidd compiled a 139-152 record overall, leading the Bucks to the playoffs in 2015 and 2017. However, the Bucks have gone 4-7 in January and dropped to eighth in the Eastern Conference standings. That was a factor in the front office’s final decision, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Bucks assistant coach Joe Prunty will serve as the interim head coach for Monday night’s game against the Suns, but who will be at the helm for the long-term future? Here are 10 candidates the Bucks will likely consider in their search for a new head coach.

During the last few weeks, a lot has happened to me, and I would like to share some of it with you guys. Additionally, we’ll start our #AskTheis segment, and you can see at the end of the blog whether your question has made the cut. Enjoy reading!

A personal highlight was the NBA London Game against the 76ers. Everything was well-organized, so we had a really good time, and I was obviously happy that we were able to win and head back to Boston on a positive note. We would have loved to explore the city a bit more and do some sightseeing, but due to practice and PR sessions, our schedule was packed already. Media attention was incredible, and there were a lot of celebrities at the game, notably famous football figures like Julian Draxler, Kevin de Bruyne and Sir Alex Ferguson. I was very thankful to be able to experience an event like that.

The 31-yard return set the Browns up at the Giants 39-yard line.

Pace of play … The NFL made quickening the pace of games a priority this season, and Goodell said in New York he’s pleased with the results thus far.

“We said all along this wasn’t about reducing the length of games,” Goodell said. “It was the pace of the game. The 40-second clock is an example we put in after the point-after-touchdown and after the touchdowns and had a real impact.

However, the Browns were unable to take advantage of the impressive field position. Cleveland ended up coming away with zero points after Brock Osweiler threw an interception.

If the first two weeks of the preseason are any indication, opposing offensive linemen could be in trouble anytime they go up against Myles Garrett this season. After an impressive debut against the Saints last week, the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft picked up his first sack of the preseason on Monday when he took down Geno Smith.

You know how NFL teams say that those dreaded distractions must be avoided at all costs? What about when the owner of the team is the person creating the off-field turbulence?

The Browns are on the clock. The No. 1 overall selection in the NFL draft is secured. In the meantime, they seek their own brand of perfection when they play Sunday at Pittsburgh with a winless season still within reach.

“I wholeheartedly agree with the commissioner’s statement,” Spanos said in statement posted to the team’s website. “The NFL and its players, more than anything, have been a force for good. What our country needs right now is a message of unity, civility and mutual respect.”

As someone who is required to watch that game, I can’t believe I’m saying this … but I am. It’s time for the Jaguars to unleash Blake Bortles, against the mighty Steelers, in Pittsburgh, with a trip to the AFC title game at stake.chargers_076

NFL confirms Justin Timberlake as Super Bowl halftime performer

Reports had leaked out last month about Justin Timberlake performing at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, and on Sunday, the NFL provided confirmation. The 36-year-old Grammy winner will return to the biggest stage in the country’s most-watched TV show for the first time since his infamous “wardrobe malfunction” moment with Janet Jackson in 2004.

Of the way his experience differed with that of Jackson, Timberlake said in a 2006 interview with MTV, “It’s an understatement to say that it was sort of unfair. If you consider it 50/50, I probably got 10 percent of the blame. And I think that says something about society. I think that America’s harsher on women and I think that America’s unfairly harsh on ethnic people.”

Right guard Brandon Brooks and right tackle Lane Johnson were very physical in the run game, and both gave up a couple of pressures, but their positive play this season has really given their quarterbacks great time and throwing lanes for the run-pass option, which many times includes slants to the right side. While there was concern all week about left tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai going against Everson Griffen in this game, he was very solid and only allowed a pair of pressures, proving to many that he is a starter in this league.

The lone sack allowed occurred because of a running back chip on Johnson’s man; knocked off the block, Johnson ended up tripping. It’s a comical play, to say the least, as the chip is supposed to help the tackle in need. In this case, he really didn’t need the help, but I don’t think any offensive linemen will be complaining about getting chips in the future.

It may seem like quarterback Eli Manning will play forever, but eventually Big Blue will have to find his successor, and the No. 1 pick would allow them to select any of the aforementioned quarterbacks pegged to go at the top of the draft, a tantalizing upgrade over current backup Davis Webb, a third-round pick in 2017.patriots_025_ada3e7ae71ca947a-180x180
